False information in photo caption published by NBC 20210207

Credit to US House photographer. And there is more.

| By Greg Fisher

In a report published by NBC News, a photo caption falsely identifies the speaker of the House as Majority Leader.

If that were not bad enough, the photograph is credited to a House of Representatives photographer. And so, the proverbial plot thickens. #ThePeopleNearTheSeas

Pelosi has never been Majority Leader.

The full caption is "Rep. Veronica Escobar, D-Texas, snaps a selfie while on the House floor with other women in Congress including House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California. Leah Herman / House of Representatives." #caption

Photo caption containing false information

The article itself, dated March 8, 2019, was written by Suzanne Gamboa, Phillip Mena and Cora Cervantes and is titled "Veronica Escobar made history in Congress. Now she's on the front lines of the border battle."

Attribution to the outside photographer aside, NBC News does not escape scrutiny over other instances of the same false information. #2102B

On a page titled, "Trump says we're 'rounding the turn,' but Covid-19 is spreading faster than ever, NBC numbers show," in an inset of bullet points of "other coronavirus news," somebody wrote: "Writing to her fellow Democrats, House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi signaled there is unlikely to be a new Covid-19 relief bill before Election Day next Tuesday and ripped Trump and his team for that failure. 'From "hoax" to hundreds of thousands dead, the White House has failed miserably – not by accident, but by decision,' she wrote." #falsity

The article surrounding the inset was written by Nigel Chiwaya and Corky Siemaszko. #n74263

A link in the first sentence above leads to an item that truthfully calls Pelosi Speaker. The second leads to one written by Lauren Egan, "a reporter for NBC News based in Washington."

Elsewhere in the NBC domain, Egan falsely wrote, "'Congress is grateful for the Administration’s generous offer to deploy rapid COVID-19 testing capabilities to Capitol Hill, but we respectfully decline the offer at this time,' Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said in a joint statement."

And in 2019 — also in disagreement with truth — Danielle Campoamor wrote, "House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, for one, disagrees — at least on the disqualifying part."

But even the official website of the House contains the same falsity. One case, from as early as 2014, is in the subdomain of Congressman Paul Gosar (D.D.S.). A press release states, "The letter, addressed to Speaker John Boehner and Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, goes on to say, 'Without full funding of these programs, counties throughout our districts and across the nation will be unable to provide our constituents with essential services such as education, law enforcement, and road maintenance.'"

And that's another story.
